It’s winter on Lake Coeur d’Alene. A beautiful time of year with plenty of great views and fun activities. While swimming may be out of the question for most, that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to do on and around the lake. In this article, we’ll cover some of the events and activities you can enjoy on CDA Lake this holiday season while we wait for the boating season to once again make its long-awaited return. Don’t worry, there are plenty of great ways to experience the lake this winter… we promise.
Winter Coeur d’Alene Lake Activities
Let’s jump right in. What is there to do on the lake in winter?
Many people come to the lake to enjoy the winter scenery. The snow-capped mountains and hillsides make for a picturesque backdrop whether you’re on the lake or looking down from one of the many surrounding peaks, but there is more to offer than just a pretty view.
North Pole Cruises
One of the most popular winter activities on Lake Coeur d’Alene are the North Pole Cruises. For over 25 years this family adventure has been a tradition and much-anticipated event of the season. These cruises take you on a tour of the lake while you enjoy hot cocoa and cookies, listen to Christmas music, and even catch a glimpse of Santa himself as he reads names from his nice list.
These cruises run from November 15th into the new year. Visit CDACruises.com for booking details!
Holiday Lights Viewing
Each winter on Lake Coeur d’Alene thousands of beautiful lights and decorations sprinkle the shoreline, turning the lake into a dazzling winter wonderland. This is a great activity for families, friends, or even a romantic evening.
If you want to get the most out of the lights as they make their yearly debut, by far the best way to experience the lighting ceremony is to see it from the water. CDA Cruises also puts on Lighting Ceremony Cruises on November 25th from 5:00pm – 7:00pm.
Eagle Watching
As the temperatures drop bald eagles make their way to Lake Coeur d’Alene in search of an easy meal. These majestic birds can be seen along the lake shore or flying overhead. Keep your eyes peeled and you’re sure to catch a glimpse of one of these national symbols.
If you want to get a good look at the eagles and learn a bit about them as well, consider taking one of CDA Eagle Watching Tours. These tours are led by experienced naturalists who will teach you all about these amazing birds.
Polar Bear Plunge
It may sound crazy… but yes you can swim Coeur d’Alene Lake in the winter. Fair warning it’s cold and you won’t want to spend long in the water but every New Years hundreds of people make their way down to the shoreline for an icy dip in the water.
Even if you decide you don’t necessarily want to dive in, it is a great activity and a lot of fun to take part in. There is always a great atmosphere at the event and it’s a great way to start the new year.
